5 Really Good Books: Superhero Graphic Novels

Hey everyone!

I’m Bill and I’m the Collection Development Librarian for the Scott County Public Library system and I want to welcome you to this installment of our 5 Really Good Books feature here at Reading Advised.

I’ve loved superheroes and comic books since I was able to read.  I grew reading the amazing adventures of DC comic and Marvel comic characters until I was an older teen and other publishers began to appear.  I would stay up nights and read the issues of Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, SpiderMan, and others until I would fall asleep.  I eventually fell in love with team books such as the Avengers, the Justice League, X-Men, and the Teen Titans.

One of the pleasures I have here at the library is being able to select so many different graphic novels for all ages.  But my heart still lies with the dramatic escapades that I sometimes wish could happen in our world, especially today.  Graphic novels provide a wonderful escape to a different time and place.  And yes, parents, graphic novels are considered reading.  Don’t be afraid to let your kids read these wonderful books.  They can find some valuable lessons and tools in how to deal with the world around them from reading graphic novels.

I want to share with you 5 graphic novels that we currently have available in our collection here at the library.  As always, you can put these on hold with your Evergreen Indiana library card and you can even find great graphic novels online at OverDrive & Libby.  Check them out with your library card now.  If you have questions, don’t hesitate to give one my of fellow librarians a call at 812-752-2751 or send us an email here to the blog at readingadvised@gmail.com.

Don’t forget to stay tuned for upcoming installments of 5 Really Good Books.  We got hundreds more things to share.

Teen Titans: Raven

Author:  Kami Garcia

Illustrator:  Gabriel Picolo

When a tragic accident takes the life of seventeen-year-old Raven Roth’s foster mom—and Raven’s memory—she moves to New Orleans to live with her foster mother’s family and finish her senior year of high school.

Starting over isn’t easy. Raven remembers how to solve math equations and make pasta, but she can’t remember her favorite song or who she was before the accident. When strange things start happening—things most people would consider impossible—Raven starts to think it might be better not to know who she was in her previous life.

But as she grows closer to her foster sister, Max, her new friends, and Tommy Torres, a guy who accepts her for who she is now, Raven has to decide if she’s ready to face what’s buried in the past…and the darkness building inside her.
